Day 3 Jesus Dies taking our Punishment
Jesus dies on the Cross
This is in the Bible in Luke Chapter 23
Yesterday we discovered that that Jesus has the authority and power to forgive sins because he is God. But he can’t just ignore our wrong doing and say it doesn’t matter.
And today in the true Bible story we see how Jesus made it possible for us to be forgiven and know God as our friend. It is quite amazing and shows us how much he loved us.
People didn't like Jesus being God’s king. In fact they didn't want him being their boss and one day the church leaders arrested Jesus & took him to the Roman ruler called Pilate.
Pilate knew that Jesus had done nothing wrong and certainly didn’t deserve to die. But everyone kept shouting at him that Jesus had to die. Pilate didn’t want fights to start because people were so angry. So he decided to give in. He allowed Jesus to be killed on a cross.
Jesus was nailed to a cross, and they put a sign above his head saying “This is Jesus, the king of the Jews” The people laughed at Jesus and made fun of Him.
Suddenly it went completely dark. The sun just stopped shining even though it was lunchtime and it lasted 3 hours. God made it happen to show that Jesus was being separated from God. God left him all alone.
We should be separated from God because of all the wrong things we have done, but Jesus loves us so much that he took the punishment we deserved and was separated instead of us.
Then Jesus died, and at that very moment the huge curtain in the temple tore in half from top to bottom. In Jerusalem the temple was where God’s people used to meet; there was a big thick curtain which separated all the people from the special place where God chose to be. That curtain reminded people of their sin, and the punishment they deserved.
Any way that curtain tore in 2 when Jesus died, because God loves us so much that he took away the barrier between us and God.
That means we can be friends with God and be forgiven forever! That is brilliant news, in fact the best news ever. Even the Roman soldier knew who Jesus was and believed in him.
And later, so did Jesus’ disciples, because after Jesus’ body was taken down from the cross and placed in a tomb, something amazing happened. Three days later, when the women went to the tomb, they found that the stone had been rolled away. An angel was there and told them that Jesus had been raised from the dead!
Anyone can be forgiven by God & know him. That is amazing!
